Too long

Stupid Blogspot froze my blog, so no posts for the last coupla weeks. I'm not too happy about that, cuz I did a lot of knitting. My bro and his wife and kid were in town for a week, so I wanted to make them gifts. After surreptitiously asking each the other's fave colors, I decided on socks for both and a lacy sweater for my niece. My bro's sox were Cherry Tree Hill Supersock. I was really surprised at the way the colors turned out, though. In the hank, it looked mostly black with some splashes of blue, magenta and green, but it gave out even spirals instead. Not that it was ugly, it was just not what I'd expected. Eh.

For my sis-in-law, I frogged a pair of socks that had been bothering me. Lorna's Laces shepard sock in shades of pink and white. Plain tall socks for my bro, completely done; feather and fan legs for my SIL, one almost done. And the baby's sweater is completely done, other than sewing the pieces together.

I also finished the last little bits on my fishnets and wove the ends in on 3 or 4 different pairs of socks. Oh, and knit a chemo-style hat for my husband's grandma- that took me less than an hour. Well, times 3, cuz I kept having to resize it.

Pix next time of all of the above.

only me

Only I would be this lucky. On the fore-mentioned socks, I am now so near the finish line I can lick the tape. This is, of course, the perfect time for me to screw up.

This is how close I am to finishing the sock- 5 rows, then grafting.

THIS is how much yarn I have left- about 5 inches.

Now I acknowledge that I am not great at the math, but even I know that I will need more than an inch of yarn for each row.

But it's ok, I have a plan.

I'll just undo about 2 inches of the leg, redo 12 rows of ribbing, and use the rest of the yarn to finish the toe.

Being me, this means I will also need to make the leg of the other sock 2 inches shorter.

Maybe some people can live with socks that are two different heights, but I am not one of them.

Maybe I should rename these socks The Black Hole socks. As in, that's where all my knitting time goes.

these f*ing socks

This pair of socks is ruining my life. My knitting life, anyway (there's another kind?)

I bought this colorway of Koigu on a whim- blues and pinks. I like blue, and I love pink, so I should love this color, right? Meh. I'm ambivalent. Worse, when I started, I was using two circular needless having taught myself that way of socking only one pair ago. I finished the first sock, tried it on and hated it. It was too thick. Which means, of course, that the needle was too small. Ok, go up a size to 3's. Since I had a lace pattern on the leg, the only thing that bothered me was the foot, so I undid the foot and reknit on 3's. Much looser. Maybe, too loose?

The foot was almost hole-y. Not to mention the drastically different color-striping patterns. But I thought, let's wait a day. Maybe I'm not as unhappy as I thought I was.

So I cast on for the second sock, using my trusty ChiaoGoo dpns this time. After finishing the ribbing, I noticed that there seemed to be a THIRD color pattern happening.

WTF? Had a horrible thought. I went back and measured my circs. 1's!!!

Oh, bother.

Sigh.

See the huge difference?

I'm far too anal to let this go, so I knew that when I finished the second sock, I would go back and completely redo the first sock- on the right size needles. But in between I started working on the fishnets so as not to rip my hair out.

When I got back to the Koigu, I frogged the first sock and cast on the ribbing.

And promptly worked 12 rows in the wrong ribbing (k2, p2 instead of k2, p1).

D'oh!

Frog.

Cast on. Again. For the third time.

Ok, right number of stitches this time, AND the right ribbing. 12 rows, check, on to lace pattern, check.

I'm nearly done with the leg now, and what do I see?

A FOURTH color pattern! Nearly vertical stripes, instead of spirals!

Monday, Monday

Wait, it's not Monday? But I haven't gone to bed yet, so isn't it still Monday night? Ehh. Whatever.

Nearly done with my first pair of fishnets. Have this nagging feeling (when I look at the size of the ball I'm knitting from) that I'm going to run out of yarn shortly. Very shortly.

I'm using the lovely Lolita pattern from knitty. I had issues with the toes, so I ended up just making them up as I went along. Not too bad, but I really should fix them so they look like real toes. As I am larger than normal (honestly, I'm larger than an extra-large) I added more increases where appropriate, but all turned out for the best. But I should still block the finished first stocking and then lace it up and try it on. Take a few pictures, yes? Right-o, then. Next post, pictures.
